How compound interest works

  1. step 1

You start with a starting amount

That amount grows every month with the return.

  2. step 2

    You contribute every month

Every contribution counts from that month on and grows too.

  3. step 3

    Return on return

Earlier years' return itself earns a return too, so the line gets steeper every year.

end value = start × (1 + r)ⁿ + contribution × ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1) ÷ r, where r = annual return ÷ 12 and n = number of months

Frequently asked questions

What return can I use?

The calculator opens at 8% a year and shows a band from 5% to 11% around it. That's an assumption, not a promise: past returns are no guarantee for the future.

What does inflation do to the outcome?

Turn on 'in today's euros' and the calculator converts everything back to today's euros, using 2.5% inflation a year by default.

Does the tool account for box 3?

If you want. Turn on box 3 and the calculator deducts the estimated levy every year, under both today's system and the proposal from 2028.

Is this a prediction?

No. It's a worked example with a fixed return per year. In reality the market fluctuates.

Use your real contributions?

Upload your transactions. StockQuarters fills in your current value and average monthly contribution, and shows your own return so far alongside.
